Library Learning Enrichment Garden Project

Implementation of the Library Learning Enrichment Garden project to manage stormwater and control erosion on the grounds of Parnell Memorial Library has been accomplished. The project is creating a beautiful, eco-friendly garden and learning environment that will enhance the community. Working in partnership with the PML Foundation and the City of Montevallo, Shelby County provided coordination and in-kind services for the project.
The educational impact of the project will be significant because of the close proximity of the library landscaping project to Montevallo's elementary, middle, and high schools and to the University of Montevallo.
The project is already having positive environmental results for Montevallo and for those areas downstream from Montevallo in the Cahaba River watershed, since it is reducing the pollutants that flow into Shoal Creek and ultimately into the ecologically vital but endangered Cahaba River.
The Library Garden is beautifying the area beside Parnell Memorial Library and is contributing to the revitalization of downtown Montevallo.
Contributions to the project should be sent via the "Donate" button below OR to Parnell Memorial Library Foundation, P. O. Box 62, Montevallo, Alabama 35115.

Library Learning Enrichment Garden Dedication
Posted 10/2/13
The dedication of the Library Learning Enrichment Garden at Parnell Memorial Library was held on September 19, 2013 on the Parkside Terrace. Partners in the development of the project were Parnell Memorial Library Foundation, sponsor of the dedication event, the City of Montevallo, and Shelby County. Mayor Hollie Cost recognized the many ways that the garden project addresses goals of the City. Shelby County Manager Alex Dudchock praised the County workers who helped bring the project to fruition, observing that the County provided in-kind services while the Foundation raised the money for the project and paid the bills.
After highlighting the subcontractors and vendors for the project, Libbie Rodgers, co-chair of the Library Garden Steering Committee, expressed appreciation to all the project donors as of that date. These people and others who contribute at least $100 by February 2014 will be listed on the garden donor wall in the Rotunda of the library.
Following the remarks, the group was treated to a reception and invited to tour the garden. Members of the Steering Committee were on hand to explain special features of the garden: the redesigned stormwater infrastructure and the Ethel Elise Rasmusson Bioswale to slow and filter stormwater and reduce erosion and flooding; the rainwater harvesting system linked to the irrigation system to reduce erosion and conserve municipal water supplies; the Kelly Garden in memory of Agee Kelly, the Brown Garden given by J. A. and Eleanor Brown, and the Victor Stanley benches in memory of Ann Parker and Willilee Trumbauer.
In November of 2013, volunteers from the Foundation and from Friends of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens planted a wetland garden behind the Parkside Terrace.
Those wishing to donate to the garden project or to make contributions in honor of or in memory of individuals are invited to send their gifts to Parnell Memorial Library Foundation, P. O. Box 62, Montevallo, AL 35115. Individuals, families, businesses, and organizations donating $100 or more to the project will be listed on the garden donor wall in the Library Rotunda. For more information about the project, please call 205-616-4392.
