Art by Charlie Lucas of Selma, Alabama was in the PML Gallery from March 14 through May 6, 2011. The gallery talk and reception were held Sunday, March 27, at 2:00 p. m.
Mr. Lucas, born in 1951, is an Alabama native and a self-taught artist. Although enjoying art at a young age, he did not begin seriously creating art until he was an adult. As he turned discarded objects such as tin, bicycle wheels, and wire into art objects, art became his chosen medium for self expression. Through his art, he tells the story of his heritage, race, his impoverished childhood, and his own life struggles. The exhibit represents only a fraction of the work of this prolific artist.
He has exhibited his works nationally and internationally and has taught art classes, been a visiting speaker, and served as artist-in-residence at various universities.
Mr. Lucas divides his time between Pink Lady, Alabama, and Selma. He also has a sculpture garden in Prattville, Alabama.
